The number of commercial drivers is predicted to increase 9 percent per year into the future. Of the 7 million drivers who are on the road, more than 40 percent must have a new exam each year because of a medical condition.
The maximum interval for any driver is two years, but when drivers change jobs, nearly all companies require drivers to get a fresh medical exam even if they have a current medical certificate.
Some large nationwide motor carriers have 100 percent or more driver turnover per year. FMCSA estimates that “new employee” medical exams will increase the number of physical exams performed by 31 percent.
