Commercial Vehicle Safety Alliance’s 72-hour safety blitz, "Road Check", is scheduled for June 7-9, 2011. Roadcheck is the largest targeted enforcement program on commercial vehicles in the world, with an average of 14 trucks or buses being inspected every minute from Canada to Mexico during a 72-hour period. Each year, approximately 10,000 CVSA-certified local, state, provincial and federal inspectors at 1,500 locations across North America perform the truck and bus inspections.
CVSA sponsors Roadcheck with participation by the Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration, Pipeline and Hazardous
Materials Safety Administration, Canadian Council of Motor Transport Administrators, Transport Canada, and the Secretariat
of Communications and Transportation (Mexico).

These Government Lobbyist Organizations represent the largest trucking concerns in Canada and the United States.
Their primary goal: To increase profits and decrease competition in the trucking industry. This is the only logical reason speed limiters are being promoted for future legislation in the USA.
Here's a video of OOIDA Life Member, Ed Wesselius of Guelph, Ontario explaining why speed governors are actually more dangerous and create added driver stress, fatigue, and frequent incidents of road rage against the driver's. Late last month Pennsylvania State Police truck inspectors focused their attention on Commercial Trucks hauling as support for Marcellus Shale Natural Gas operations. State Police inspected a total of 1,175 trucks. 1,066 tickets were written, 207 trucks were placed out of service for mechanical safety violations and 52 truck drivers were also removed from service. The most common problems involved unsecured loads and inoperable vehicle lights, marker lamps, hours of service violations and failure to wear seat belts.
The projected $5 billion dollar deficit Pennsylvania faces in 2011 has prompted the state to create more revenue from traffic operations. Commercial vehicle inspections can be expected to increase across the state as they realize the enormous profit potential from truck and truck driver inspection stings.
Also of concern to truck drivers will be increased scrutiny on speeding trucks. You can expect law enforcement to target truckers at every opportunity, as California has done for the past 20 years.
Truck drivers should protect themselves and their wallets by making sure their big trucks are in good working order to pass truck inspections without violations. Log books should be kept current and accurate, seat belts worn, safe driving rules adhered to and, in general, keep a low profile. "Total Stealth" is the word of the day.
Drivers can be aware of upcoming sting operations and speed traps on the highway by investing in a good police scanner. A Police scanner is an essential tool for most veteran truck drivers and owner operators. Also, drivers should follow safe driving rules at all times, try to blend in and go un-noticed by police. Speed limiters are NOT the answer, unless they want more wrecks from frustrated drivers because all the buses are now running side by side and NOBODY can pass. This will cause maximum congestion and dangerous passing manuevers from motorists. It will look like ice road truckers in India. The Answer to their bus wreck problem is hiring competent people to drive their bus's! Speed limiters will not help at all.
After research, we noticed this is not the only deadly accident involving Metro Mass Transit buses. An accident occurred on August 16, 2010, 4AM at Koni-Kablu near Dawa when a MMT bus travelling from Mepe in the Volta Region to Accra crashed into a stationary truck parked on the shoulder of the road.
Fifteen people in the MMT bus were killed on the spot, while four others died later on admission at the Battor Catholic Hospital. Read more about this accident. http://tettehamoako.blogspot.com/2010/08/bloody-monday23-perish-in-gory-accident.html

A federal rule that bans texting while driving a commercial vehicle went into effect Wed, Oct. 27 2010.
The fines are hefty, up to $2,750 for the driver and up to $11,000 for the carrier. Texting while driving is a driver responsible offense and is worth 10-points under CSA 2010, a Very Severe Offense.
OOIDA, the Owner Operator Independent Drivers Association had a strong hand in crafting the legislation and a few exceptions were made.
